How to Replace a Washer Inside a Hose Bibb

    • 1). Shut off the water supply to the hose bibb that needs to be repaired. If this is a newer home, there may be a separate shut off valve for the hose bibb located behind it, such as a basement or outdoor building. In an older home, you will have to shut off the water supply for the entire house. Locate the water meter for your home. The main water shut-off valve usually is installed adjacent to the water meter. Rotate this valve with the pliers.

    • 2). Open the hose bibb and allow any water inside to run out.

    • 3). Slip the adjustable wrench around the hexagonal nut just beneath the bibb handle. Rotate this counterclockwise to loosen the hose bibb stem. Pull the stem out of the faucet.

    • 4). Rotate the faucet stem so the handle is facing towards the ground. Use a flat-bladed screwdriver to remove the screw holding the washer in place on the bottom. Pull the washer out of the valve stem.

    • 5). Insert a new washer into the bottom of the stem. Thread the screw into the opening on the bottom and tighten. Place a few drops of silicone grease on the face of the washer after inserting it into the stem and tightening in place.

    • 6). Apply pipe thread compound to the threads of the stem. Insert the stem into the hose bibb. Tighten with the wrench by turning clockwise.

    • 7). Restore the water supply.
