Upholstery Cleaning Methods

    Brush

    • Remove any loose cushions from the furniture. Use a soft-bristled hand brush to loosen the dirt from the furniture and cushions.

    Vacuum

    • Use your vacuum cleaner's upholstery attachments to remove dust and dirt on a weekly basis. Vacuum all the surfaces, including the sides, backs, crevices and skirts. Vacuum all sides of the cushions.

    Dry Shampoo

    • Mix some upholstery shampoo following the manufacturer's instructions. Agitate the soapy solution to create a rich, sudsy foam. Clean the upholstery using a sponge and the shampoo foam. Vacuum the foam solution and then dry it off with a soft towel.

    Wet Shampoo

    • Use this method for heavily soiled furniture where moisture is not a major concern. Work your shampoo solution into the upholstery using a brush. Use a sponge and bucket of warm, clean water to rinse away the soap and dirt. Dry it off with a soft towel.

    Leather

    • Clean leather upholstered furniture by wiping it weekly using a soft, damp cloth. Once a month, clean it with leather cleaner, which will clean as well as protect the leather, keeping it supple.
