Digging

• 1). Dig a trench around the stump. Begin a few inches away from the trunk. Make a circular trench all the way around the stump.
  
  
• 2). Cut the roots of the stump with a lawn bar. A lawn bar looks like an oversized chisel. Once the roots are exposed, use the lawn bar to cut the roots. Thrust the lawn bar downwards towards the trunk.
  
  
• 3). Pry the stump loose from the ground. Work the lawn bar and shovel under the edges of the stump. Rock the stump back and forth until it begins to move. Place the lawn bar and shovel under another area of the stump and repeat the process until the stump moves freely.
  
  
• 4). Pull the stump out of its hole. Attach one end of a chain around the stump and the opposite end to a tractor or pickup truck. Carefully pull the stump out of its hole.
  
  

Grinding

• 1). Rent a grinder at the local hardware or rental store. Measure the diameter of the stump so that you will know what size grinder to rent. Ask for a grinder that has a protective skirt. This will protect you from flying debris.
  
  
• 2). Remove rocks and debris from the stump and surrounding area. This will prevent damage to the grinding wheel and will also prevent the risk of personal injury.
  
  
• 3). Place the grinder in front of the stump. Raise the wheel a few inches above the stump. Turn the grinder on and move the wheel from side to side. Stop the grinder and remove chips and debris from the stump. Turn the grinder on and repeat the process until you reach the ground.
  
  

Burning

• 1). Check with the local fire department. Make sure that a burn ordinance is not in place. Check the local forecast. If rain or high winds are expected, postpone the burning until the weather conditions improve.
  
  
• 2). Cut a deep "X" into the stump. Use a chainsaw if you have one. Another option is a chisel and hammer. Pour kerosene or gasoline into the hole and let it soak for a few hours.
  
  
• 3). Cut the bottom out of a barrel. Place the barrel over the stump. Put wood and kindling into the barrel and start the fire. It may take two or three days for the stump to completely burn.
