Video: How to Repair a Rip in an Oil Painting
Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Jocelyn with Arizona Art Supply. And today we're going to talk about how to repair a rip in an oil painting. As you can see, there's a nice, large rip in this oil painting here. So what we're going to do is we're going to turn it over, we're going to lay it very flat and we're going to take some ilenes glue with a piece of cotton canvas, try to get as close to the canvas as possible and we're going to brush on the ilene's tacky glue. Make sure that the piece of canvas that you have selected is the right size for the cut in your painting. Once you've applied the glue, simply turn it over and lay it flat. I like to add a little bit of extra glue around the edges to ensure that it lays nice and flat and stays that way. Make sure to get all the corners glued down. Now you're going to want to lay a book or heavy object so that everything dries nice and flat. Make sure to use some saran wrap or some wax paper so that nothing sticks to the patch. Once you've waited the full 24 hours for it to dry you're going to turn your canvas over and you can see where the glue is white where the tear is, you're going to take a very small brush and you're going to set it in the glue and you're going to recreate the texture of the canvas. So you're going to make little tiny lines trying to follow the lines that are already existing on the canvas and that'll create your texture. Once that is dry all you need to do is touch up the color of the oil pain. Here I have a painting that has already been repaired and you can see here is the patch and when you turn it over to the other side you virtually cannot see where it has been ripped.
