What Do You Use to Stain a Log Sided Home?
- The log-sided surface must be clean from dirt and debris prior to finishing. Log wash solutions or power washers can be used to prepare the surface for stain. Log washing consists of mixing the solution with water and applied with a low pressure sprayer. The surface is then scrubbed with a deck brush and rinsed off.
- Preventing termites, carpenter ants, fungus, and mold is necessary for maintaining the integrity of the log siding. Solutions are available from most log home suppliers. Some of the new products use a glycol system with borates which penetrates into the wood, providing superior protection. They are also applied using a low pressure sprayer. The drying time can be up to four weeks depending on the humidity and temperature. One application is all that is needed to protect the surface for the life of the home.
- A UV additive protects the surface from ultraviolet light darkening the wood in areas of high sunlight and higher altitudes. It also prevents the natural graying of the wood under the stain coat. This product is normally water-based and is mixed in with the color coat for application.
- There are many colors and shades available for the color coat. A clear sealer is not recommended because of the limited UV protection it provides. Remember, the darker the pigment, the better the UV protection. Most log home builders recommend a semi transparent stain over a solid color so the natural beauty of the wood shows through. The color coat is sprayed with a low pressure garden type sprayer and back brushed immediately. Two coats are recommended for proper coverage and protection.
- A clear or top coat is required on a two-part finishing system. This method is similar to the clear coat over the base coat on an automobile. The clear coat is acrylic resin with several additives that provide the ultimate protection for the stain. It is breathable, thus allowing moisture to evaporate from the log siding. You can select a satin or high-gloss finish. Two coats are applied and allowed to dry for three days. Once the finish begins to wear, an additional coat can be applied without additional stain to prolong the life of the finish.
