Homemade Mold Destroyers

    White Vinegar

    • A natural fungus killer, cleaning liquid and flea treatment, white vinegar helps keep your home clean and smelling fresh. Use white vinegar at full strength to destroy mold and its odors on carpets, floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, sinks and tubs. Pour undiluted white vinegar in a spray bottle and mist the mold. After 15 minutes, wipe the mold off the surface with a damp cloth. Apply vinegar to the area again and let it dry. Reapply the vinegar as needed to keep mold away and remove unpleasant odors.

    Borax

    • A natural cleaning and mold-removing option, borax does not contain unnecessary chemicals. Pour 1 gallon of lukewarm water in a bucket and add 1 cup of borax. Since borax is in powdered form, let it dissolve in water before using it as a mold killer. Dampen a sponge in the borax mixture and scrub the mold. Once you have removed all traces of the mold, rinse the surface clean with cool water. Letting the borax mixture dry on the surface leaves a gritty residue.

    Bleach

    • Both chlorine bleach and oxygen bleach removes mold from hard surfaces. Oxygen bleach does not contain the harsh chemicals chlorine bleach does, and does not discolor surfaces. However, chlorine bleach is more common in homes and generally cheaper. No matter which bleach you choose, use a ratio of 1 cup of bleach per every gallon of water, and rinse the surface clean with cool water after removing the mold.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Humid and damp bathrooms provide a breeding ground for fungus. To destroy mold lurking in your bathroom, use hydrogen peroxide. Mix 1 part of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts of cool water. Add the mixture to a spray bottle and thoroughly mist the mold in sinks, tubs, grout and showers. Leave the diluted peroxide mixture on the mold for one hour before rinsing the surface clean with cool water. If the mold remains, reapply the mixture and scrub with a scrub brush before rinsing the surface with cool water.
