Information on the Abutilon Plant
- Abutilon plants are commonly known as the flowering maple, a reference to its leaves which resemble the maple leaf. It is also called the Chinese bell flower as the flowers resemble the hanging paper lamps common in Asia.
- When kept outdoors the flowers of the Abutilon attract hummingbirds and butterflies. In addition to the beauty of the flowers themselves, many people grow Abutilons because they enjoy watching the different butterfly and hummingbird species the trees attract.
- The Abutilon is a vigorous grower. If placed in too large of a container it can grow to 8 to 10 feet in height and spread out quite large. Abutilons need regular pruning and should be planted in small containers to keep their growth in check.
- Both indoors and outdoors Abutilons require filtered sun or partial shade to achieve their best results. They also should be kept out of extreme temperatures, 70 degrees F during the day and low to mid 60's at night are ideal.
- Abutilons are hardy to approximately USDA zone 8. Therefore, they should be brought inside during the cold winter months experienced by northern states.
- To keep an Abutilon growing healthy and producing beautiful flowers all summer, alternate between feeding it all purpose liquid fertilizer and bloom type liquid fertilizer at half strength. No special schedule is required; follow the intervals suggested on the fertilizer container.
