Campgrounds are plentiful at Pueblo State Park, and water skiing and fishing activities on the reservoir are easily accessed by campers. At Blue Mesa Reservoir, near Gunnison, three campgrounds are located on the shoreline. All campgrounds in this sagebrush-dominated area have a boat ramp and several sites can be reserved.

    Considerations

    • Pine beetles are a major issue affecting several campgrounds in Colorado. Tree-cutting in campgrounds means less shade and in some cases, closures of some camping spots. RV camping is a popular summer activity in Colorado and reservations are encouraged at most campgrounds and RV parks. If reservations are not available, it’s a good idea to arrive early. Most lakes in Colorado are requiring inspections for mussels. This can slow down access to the lakes, especially on busy weekends.

    Time Frame

    • The best time to camp in Colorado is between Memorial Day and Labor Day when the temperature warms up and most campgrounds are open. Summer is a busy time for camping in Colorado and campgrounds can become crowded. Dispersed camping is available in some areas of the National Forest for campers who want more solitude. Campers should also consider camping in the fall when the leaves are turning and the campgrounds are not as crowded.
