- 1). Click the "Start" button on the Windows desktop and type the words "Device Manager" into the search field that appears. Press the "Enter" key. The device manager window opens showing a list of all the hardware installed on the computer arranged into groups according to function. The options "Display Adapters" contains video cards; "DVD/CD-ROM Drivers" holds CD and DVD players; and "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" lists sound cards.
- 2). Click the category for your media device. Double-click the name of the specific media device that appears in the revealed list. A device properties window comes into view.
- 3). Click the "General" tab within the device properties window. The "Display Properties" box contains a message stating whether the device is working property.
- 4). Click the "Driver" tab in the device properties window to see the provider, age, and version of the device's driver. Click the "Driver Details" button to open a window showing the exact location and name of each driver file on the computer used by the device.
