Adding a Second Hard Drive to Windows XP

    • 1). Click the Windows XP "Start" button, and select "Run." Type "diskmgmt.msc" in the text box and click "OK." The Disk Management tool opens.

    • 2). Right-click the black label in the Disk Management window. The black label represents the free space, which is your new hard drive added to the computer. Select "New Volume" from the pop-up menu. This option opens the drive creation wizard that helps you create a drive for the computer.

    • 3). Click "Next" on the first welcome window. Select "Simple volume" in the Type drop-down box. Click "Next" again. Select "Primary Partition" in the next window. Select a drive letter from the drop-down box, and click "Next."

    • 4). Leave the default option to format the drive. You must format the drive before you are able to write information to it. Click "Next." On the final window, click "OK" to create your new drive in Windows XP. Notice the new drive letter displays in Disk Management after the wizard closes.
