- 1). Run "Disk Check" to clean up disk errors. Click on the "Start" menu and select "My Computer." Right-click on the drive that holds the bulk of your data, including system files. It is typically the "C:\" drive for most users. Select "Properties." Click on the tab labeled "Tools." Click on "Check Now..." Place a check mark next to both the "Check disk options." Click on "Start." Run this utility at least once a week to increase Windows XP speed.
- 2). Remove temporary files by using "Disk Cleanup." Click on "Disk Cleanup" under the "General" tab in the "Properties" dialog box from Step 1. Disk Cleanup will scan your hard drive and calculate the amount of space you can free up from your hard disk.
