How do I Increase Windows XP Speed?

    • 1). Run "Disk Check" to clean up disk errors. Click on the "Start" menu and select "My Computer." Right-click on the drive that holds the bulk of your data, including system files. It is typically the "C:\" drive for most users. Select "Properties." Click on the tab labeled "Tools." Click on "Check Now..." Place a check mark next to both the "Check disk options." Click on "Start." Run this utility at least once a week to increase Windows XP speed.

    • 2). Remove temporary files by using "Disk Cleanup." Click on "Disk Cleanup" under the "General" tab in the "Properties" dialog box from Step 1. Disk Cleanup will scan your hard drive and calculate the amount of space you can free up from your hard disk. This process may take a few minutes depending on the amount of files stored in your computer. Place a check mark next to all the unwanted items under "Files to delete." Click on "OK." Run this tool at least once a week.

    • 3). Use Disk Defragmenter to rearrange files on your hard disk. Click on the "Tools" tab in the "Properties" dialog box from steps 1 and 2. Click on the button "Defragment Now..." Click on "Defragment" again to start the process. This process may also take a long time depending on the amount of files stored in your computer.

    • 4). Clear Internet Explorer (IE) Web cache. Launch IE, click on the "Tools" menu and select "Internet Options." Click on "General" tab. Hit "Delete" under "Browsing History." Place a check mark next to "Temporary Internet files" and "Cookies." Hit "Delete" again.

    • 5). Update Windows XP using "Windows Update." Click on "Control Panel" on your Start menu. Click to switch to 'classic view.' Double-click on "Automatic Updates." Click to select "Automatic." Set a time of day when you want your computer to check for updates. Click on "Apply."
