How to Get Rid of a Website

    • 1). Check your website. Try to see it through someone else's eyes. The layout and color scheme must be appealing and user-friendly, so that potential buyers will find it attractive. Tweak the colors and layouts if necessary and ensure that all aspects of the site are working, such as any forums, contact pages and so forth.

    • 2). Decide which method you want to employ in order to get rid of your website. You can sell the site on your own, hire a broker, or put the website up for auction. Most domain providers (the places from which websites are purchased) offer website brokerage and auction services. If your domain provider does not offer these, use outside companies for selling and auctioning.

    • 3). Set a price at which you want to sell your website to get rid of it. Generally speaking, the sell price is usually two times to three times the yearly income the site brings in. If you are anxious to get rid of your website quickly, you can greatly reduce the price to make the selling price more enticing.

    • 4). Advertise the sale of your website. If you are selling the site on your own, with no brokerage or auction house, you are responsible for advertising it on your own. Do this in forums of sites with similar subjects, or send out a press release about the sale. Similarly, if you choose an online website auction house, garner more views and potential bidders by advertising the link to the auction.

If you choose to sell through a broker, you don't need to engage in any advertising. The brokerage will handle the advertising and sale of the site entirely.

    • 5). Complete the sale of the website. Once someone has agreed to purchase your website, you have almost gotten rid of it entirely. After the buyer transfers money to you via whichever method you choose (check, money order or online payment), you must log on to your control panel at your domain provider's website and change the registration information and "push" the domain to the new owner. All domain providers have different interfaces. Should you encounter difficulty, contact your domain provider's live help online or on the phone.
