How to Migrate Windows XP to Vista
- 1). Go to the Windows Vista machine. Click "Start." Go to "All Programs," "Accessories" and "System Tools." Click "Windows Easy Transfer."
- 2). Click "Next." Click "Close All" if prompted, as you cannot have any programs running while you're using the migration wizard. Click "Next" once the programs are closed.
- 3). Click "Start New" and "This is my new computer." Browse to the location where you want to save your migration files. The Windows Vista migration wizard uses removable media, optical media and network drives for migration. Choose the option that best suits your computer setup.
- 4). Go to your Windows XP computer. Insert the removable media containing the Easy Transfer Wizard files, if you used that option. Click "Start" and "My Network Places" to navigate to the network drive if you used the network option. Double-click "migwiz.exe" to start the Easy Transfer Wizard.
- 5). Click "Next." Pick a transfer type from the provided list. Click "Next." Browse to the location of the removable media or network drive you want to use for the transfer. Click "Next."
- 6). Choose "Everything - all user accounts, files, and program settings (recommended)" if you want to transfer all of your information from the Windows XP system to the Windows Vista system. You can also select options a la carte if you don't want to transfer everything. Click "Start." Go to the Windows Vista computer.
- 7). Insert your removable media into the Windows Vista computer if you used the media option. Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Windows Easy Transfer." Click "Next." Choose "Continue a transfer in progress." Choose the location of your migration files -- either removable media or network. Click "Next."
- 8). Select the folder containing your migration files. Click "Next." Input usernames identical to those you used on the Windows XP machine. Select hard drive locations for your migration files. Click "Start" to begin the migration.
