How to Replace the Fuel Line on a Riding Lawn Mower

    • 1). Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Position the wire so it will not contact the plug. Use the siphon to drain any remaining fuel into the gas can.

    • 2). Remove the old fuel line from the tank and carburetor. Depending on the manufacturer, this may involve removing a retaining clamp with pliers or a screw driver. Some mowers are designed with the line itself feeding into the tank and held in place by a rubber or plastic stopper. Remove the stopper so the line may be accessed.

    • 3). Purchase a replacement fuel line. Take the old line with you to get the correct line. Use the old fuel line to determine the length and cut the new line to length with a utility knife or snips. Make sure the new line is of the same interior diameter as the old line.

    • 4). Attach the new fuel line to the tank and carburetor. Use a screw driver or pliers to secure the mounting clamps around the fuel line. If necessary, insert the fuel line through a stopper and secure in the gas tank.

    • 5). Add enough fresh fuel to the gas tank to start and enable the mower to operate for at least a short period of time. A rule of thumb is to add at least 1 to 2 gallons of fuel. Avoid placing fuel in the gas tank that has been stored over a period of time.
