How to Install Deer Netting

Attach the deer netting to fence posts already in place. Typical deer netting is seven feet high and comes in a roll. Staple, tack or tie the deer netting to an existing fence to prevent deer from poking through and eating the vegetation.

Slope the netting away from protected vegetation. As deer approach the fence, it tickles their ears and they become uneasy. This makes the netting more effecting at repelling deer.

    • 3). Drape the netting over valuable shrubbery. Cut the netting to length and drape it over shrubs or garden beds that have to be protected. Edges can be secured with ground stakes.

    • 4). Move the netting frequently so tasty vegetation does not grow through. The mesh on deer netting is designed so deer can't stick their mouths through it to gather food. If vegetation grows through the deer netting, deer may make a habit of coming by to trim the vegetation regularly.

    • 5). Make a double barrier. For particularly aggressive deer, you can make a fence within a fence with the deer netting. Double fences generally confuse deer and can discourage even the hungry or aggressive ones from jumping over.

    • 6). Reinforce large spans of open deer netting. Thread a tension cable or rope through the top and bottom edges and attach these firmly to posts or trees for support. You can tie or lace ribbons throughout the netting to make it more visible to deer and prevent accidental run-throughs. Long spans should also be fixed to the ground with stakes every six feet or so.
