How to Find the Power Supply on a Computer

- 1). Back up any important files before taking the computer apart.
- 2). Click "Start" and "Shut Down" to power off the computer.
- 3). Remove any screws using a screwdriver that hold the case cover in place and gently pull the cover off of the machine.
- 4). Wrap the end of the antistatic wrist strap around one wrist and fasten the Velcro strap. Connect the other end to the metal case frame inside the computer.
- 5). Trace the colored power leads back from the hard drive, optical drive and motherboard to the power supply. Locate the screws that hold the power supply in the computer case, which are normally positioned near where the power cord plugs into the computer.
- 6). Review the label attached to the power supply for the specifications, manufacturer and model of the unit.
