How to Make a Sealed Box for JL Audio W4 Single Speaker

    • 1). Calculate the size that the subwoofer enclosure will need to be. Every subwoofer requires a particular volume of air within a sealed box. This number will be mentioned in the manufacturers manual of the subwoofer. The JL W4 subwoofer is available in several different diameters, which is another important measurement for subwoofer boxes. It is also important to measure the depth of the subwoofer from the cone to the end of the magnet. This will ensure that a subwoofer box is deep enough to hold a subwoofer. Use a subwoofer enclosure calculator to find the exact dimensions that are needed for your JL Audio W4.

    • 2). Cut six panels to form the sides of the subwoofer enclosure with a jigsaw. Once each panel is cut, mark them with a pencil to note which side they will be.

    • 3). Cut the subwoofer hole in the front panel of the subwoofer enclosure. Start by placing the compass in the middle of the panel. Draw a diameter that is equivalent to your subwoofer with a pencil. Drill a hole within this circle, insert the jigsaw, and cut out the circle.

    • 4). Cut a hole for the terminal cup in the back of the subwoofer box. This cup should be placed in the middle of the box. Trace an outline of the terminal cup, drill a hole within the outline, and cut out with a jigsaw.

    • 5). Build the subwoofer enclosure by attaching the six sides together. Pre-drill three holes on each seam and apply carpenter's glue to the seam. Place the panels together and fasten together with three 2-inch screws. Once the six sides are connected and screwed together, fasten the subwoofer terminal cup to the back using screws that came with the cup.

    • 6). Apply silicone caulking to every seam within the interior of the subwoofer box. This will form an airtight seal. Allow the enclosure to dry for at least 24 hours.
