How to Hook Up a Sony XM-D400P5 Amp to Radio and Subs
- 1). Lift the hood of the vehicle and disconnect the battery cables from the battery terminals. Use a wrench or pliers to loosen the bolt that secures each respective cable clamp to the battery terminals.
- 2). Remove the negative battery cable from the battery. The negative battery cable connects the negative battery terminal to the frame of the vehicle. Set it aside until the Sony amplifier has been installed.
- 3). Lift the positive cable clamp from the positive battery lead post. Place the ring terminal from the amplifier wiring kit onto the positive battery terminal post. Place the positive battery cable clamp back over the battery lead and tighten the bolt that secures the clamp to the post. The ring terminal is now connected to the battery for the purpose of supplying direct power to the amp.
- 4). Remove the fuse from the fuse holder on the ring terminal. Plug the amplifier wiring kit power cable into the ring terminal. Feed the cable through the firewall separating the engine compartment from the inside of the vehicle. Move to the inside of the vehicle.
- 5). Remove the stereo from the dashboard according to the vehicle's instruction manual. The patch cables that will provide the signal and power control to the amp must be connected to the outlets on the back of the stereo. With the stereo removed, disconnect the wiring from the back of the radio. Plug the stereo wiring from the vehicle into the leads of the wiring harness adapter. Plug the adapter's leads into the corresponding outlets on the rear panel of the radio.
- 6). Plug the patch cables into the wiring harness adapter leads. Consult the adapter's manual for connection point locations for adding an aftermarket amplifier or powered subwoofer.
- 7). Feed the patch cables through the back of the vehicle's stereo dock and down to the floor on the passenger's side of the vehicle. Install the radio following the directions in the repair manual.
- 8). Place the Sony XM-D400P5 in the trunk or rear cargo area of the vehicle, ideally near the location of the subwoofer.
- 9). Connect the speaker wires from the outlets on the amp (located at the right side of the amp's outlet panel) to the corresponding inputs of the sub (positive to positive, negative to negative).

Route the power cable from the floor on the driver's side of the vehicle, along the left side of the vehicle's cabin, to the location of the amp. Plug the cable into the "POWER" outlet. The power outlet is the middle outlet of the three outlets to the right of the fuses on the amp. - 11
Route the patch cables from the passenger's side of the vehicle, along the right side of the vehicle's cabin, to the location of the amp. Plug the patch cable connectors into the "line input" jacks on the amp. - 12
Insert a grounding wire from the amplifier wiring kit (or other 18-gauge wire) to the ground outlet to the right of the power outlet. Connect the wire to a screw or bolt in the rear cargo area of the vehicle. Any screw or bolt connected directly to the vehicle's frame will do. Return to the vehicle's engine compartment. - 13
Place the negative battery cable clamp back onto the negative battery terminal. Tighten the bolt to secure the clamp to the lead post with a wrench or pair of pliers. Place the fuse into the ring terminal's fuse holder. Close the vehicle's hood.
