How to Defrag a Swap File

    Disable the Swap File

    • 1). Right-click "My Computer" from the desktop. A context menu appears.

    • 2). Select "Properties" from the context menu. The "System Properties" window pops up.

    • 3). Select the "Advanced" tab.

    • 4). Click the button labeled "Settings" from the "Performance" section. A "Performance Settings" window appears.

    • 5). Select the "Advanced" tab.

    • 6). Press the "Change" button. The "Virtual Memory" window displays.

    • 7). Check the box labeled "No Paging File" and click the "Set" button.

    • 8). Restart your computer. The computer will not have a swap file when it reboots. This is only a temporary measure while you defragment your hard drive.

    Defragmenting the Hard Drive

    • 1). Left-click on "My Computer" from your desktop. A window opens that displays your hard drive.

    • 2). Right-click your hard drive. A "Disk Properties" page opens.

    • 3). Select the "Tools" tab.

    • 4). Click on the "Defragment Now" button. The defragmentation utility will load.

    • 5). Defragment the entire hard drive by pressing the "Defragment" button on the defragmentation utility. This process can conclude in a few minutes, or it can take many hours, depending on the size of the hard drive and the degree of fragmentation. Don't proceed to the next section until the defragmentation procedure is complete.

    Re-Enabling your Swap File

    • 1). Right-click "My Computer" from the desktop. A context menu will appear.

    • 2). Select "Properties" from the context menu. The "System Properties" window opens.

    • 3). Select the "Advanced" tab.

    • 4). Click the button labeled "Settings" from the "Performance" section. A "Performance Settings" window pops up.

    • 5). Select the "Advanced" tab.

    • 1). Press the "Change" button. The "Virtual Memory" window opens.

    • 2). Check the box labeled "System Managed Size" and click the "Set" button. The new swap file will be selected from a fully defragmented space on the hard drive.

    • 3). Restart your computer.
