How to Install XP on a SATA HDD Without a Floppy Drive for a Notebook

    • 1). Download the SATA hard drive drivers to the PC's desktop (see Resources). Download the nLite program to the desktop of the PC (see Resources). Double-click the file to start the installation. Follow the menu commands to finish the installation. Restart the PC.

    • 2). Insert the Windows XP disc into the front loading slot of the notebook's optical drive.

    • 3). Click "Start," followed by "All Applications," followed by "nLite."

    • 4). Click the "Browse" button on the program's main screen. Click the icon of the Windows XP disc in the window that appears. Click the "Open" button on the window to close the window.

    • 5). Click the "Next" button on the program's main screen to go to a new screen. Check the "Drivers" tab on the screen. Check the "Bootable ISO" checkbox on the screen. Click the "Next" button at the bottom of the screen.

    • 6). Double-click the SATA drivers file that is in the new window that appears. Click one of the ".inf" files that appear in a window. Click the "OK" button on the window.

    • 7). Click the "All" button at the bottom of the screen. Click "Yes" in the confirmation window that appears. A copy progress bar will now copy the Windows XP disc and save it to an ISO file that is integrated with the SATA drivers.

    • 8). Click the "Burn" button on the pop-up window when it appears. Right-click the icon of Windows XP that is on the desktop. Click "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Press the "Eject" button to eject the disc. Remove the disc.

    • 9). Place a blank recordable CD into the optical drive. Click "Yes" in the "Burn" confirmation window. A copy progress bar will now copy the bootable ISO file of Windows XP onto the CD. Click "OK" in the confirmation window when it appears. Quit the program.

      Right-click the icon of the CD that is on the desktop. Click "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Press the "Eject" button to eject the disc. Remove the disc. Shut off the notebook.

      Press the notebook's "On" button. Insert the CD into the optical slot on the notebook.

      A "Disc loading" message will appear on the screen. Press any key on the keyboard once after the message has appeared.

      Press the "Enter" key when a message appears asking if you want to install Windows XP. Press the "F8" key when the end-user agreement appears on the screen.

      Click a partition from the choices presented on the screen using the "up" and "down" arrows on the keyboard -- the partition that was automatically chosen can be left as is if you do not want to be responsible for making a selection. Press the "Enter" key.

      Click the "NTFS" file system from the choices presented on the screen using the "up" and "down" arrows on the keyboard. Press "Enter."

      A series of installation screens will appear and disappear on the notebook's screen. Windows XP will reboot the notebook.

      The "Windows XP Wizard" screen will appear. Click "Activate" using the "up" and "down" arrows on the keyboard. Press "Enter."

      Enter the serial key into the text field on the screen that appears -- the serial key was supplied with Windows XP when purchased. Press "Enter" after entering the number.

      Windows XP will authorize and configure itself to meet the needs of the notebook. Click "Not now" on the "Registration" screen when it appears using the "up" and "down" arrows on the keyboard. Press "Enter." Windows XP will now boot to the desktop.
